Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Plain answers about how the service works. For questions about your own teeth, only a dentist who has examined you can advise.

About the service

What does DentCarta do?

We help patients in the UK and Ireland find and compare independent dental clinics in Romania, and coordinate practical steps such as sharing your records and arranging consultations. We are not a dental practice and do not provide treatment.

Who provides my treatment?

Your treatment is provided by the clinic and dentist you choose. Your clinical relationship, consent and treatment contract are with them, not with us.

Do you give medical or dental advice?

No. Our guides are general information to help you prepare questions. Only a dentist who has examined you can advise on your treatment.

Am I obliged to go ahead after contacting a clinic?

No. You can ask questions, receive an indicative plan and decide not to proceed. Take the time you need, and speak to your own dentist if it helps.

How is the service funded?

We explain how we are paid, and any commercial relationship with clinics, before you share your details. If anything is unclear, ask us directly.

Clinics & verification

How are clinics checked?

We carry out checks before listing a clinic, including that its dentists are registered with the Colegiul Medicilor Stomatologi din România (CMSR). We explain what we check, and what we cannot check, before you are introduced to any clinic.

Does verification mean the clinic is guaranteed to get a good result?

No. Verification confirms specific facts at a point in time. It cannot guarantee clinical outcomes, which depend on many factors, including your own health.

Can I check a dentist's registration myself?

Yes, and we encourage it. Ask the clinic for the full name of the treating dentist and their registration details, and check with the CMSR.

Will I know who is treating me?

You should. Ask the clinic to confirm in writing the name of the dentist who will carry out each stage, and whether this could change.

What languages do clinic teams speak?

Many clinics treating international patients have English-speaking staff, but this varies. Confirm before booking that you can communicate clearly with your dentist.

Costs & estimates

Why don't you show prices?

Costs depend on your individual situation, so a published figure could be misleading. Each clinic provides its own indicative range, which is confirmed only after examination.

Can my estimate change after examination?

Yes. Remote estimates are based on the information available. Scans and an in-person examination may show that more, or less, treatment is needed.

What should a written quote include?

An itemised list of each treatment, materials, the number of visits, what is and is not included (for example temporary teeth, imaging, sedation), payment terms and the clinic's refund and guarantee policy.

Are travel and accommodation included?

Usually not. Factor in flights, accommodation, local transport and time off work for each trip, as well as the possibility of an extra visit.

Can I get money back from the NHS or HSE?

Reimbursement for private dental treatment abroad is limited and conditions are strict. UK patients should check NHS guidance; Irish patients should check with the HSE before travelling. Our country pages explain more.

Travel

Which cities can I travel to?

We currently cover clinics in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara, each with an international airport.

Are there direct flights?

Routes from the UK and Ireland change, and some are seasonal. Check current schedules with airlines and airports before planning.

How long will I need to stay?

It depends on the treatment. Some treatments can be done in a single trip of several days; implant-based treatments typically need at least two trips separated by months of healing.

When can I fly after surgery?

This depends on what was done. Follow the guidance of the clinician who treated you, and book flexible travel where possible.

Should I bring someone with me?

It can help, particularly for surgical treatment or if you are having sedation. Ask the clinic what support is available if you are travelling alone.

Aftercare & complications

Who looks after me once I'm home?

Agree this with the clinic before you book. In most cases your home dentist will provide routine care, so tell them about your plans and bring full records home.

What happens if something goes wrong after I return?

Ask the clinic before booking how they handle complications, whether any guarantee applies and its conditions, and whether you would need to travel back. Get the answer in writing.

Will I need ongoing maintenance?

Yes. Implants, crowns, bridges and veneers all need daily cleaning at home and regular professional check-ups to stay healthy.

What should I do if I have pain or swelling at home?

Contact the treating clinic and your local dentist. If symptoms are severe, such as spreading swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a high temperature, seek urgent medical care locally.

Does travel insurance cover complications?

Many standard policies exclude complications from planned treatment abroad. Read your policy carefully and consider specialist cover.

Privacy

What information do you ask for?

Only what is needed to help a clinic understand your situation, such as contact details, your dental concerns and, if you choose, X-rays or photos. Health information is sensitive, and we treat it accordingly.

Who do you share my information with?

We share your information with clinics only with your consent, and only with the clinics you choose. Our privacy policy sets out the details.

Can I ask you to delete my data?

Yes. Under data protection law you have rights over your personal data, including access and deletion in many circumstances. Contact us and we will explain what we hold and how we can help.

Will clinics contact me without my agreement?

They should not. You decide which clinics receive your details. If you are contacted in a way you did not expect, let us know.
