01
Why EU membership matters less for UK patients than it used to
For patients from EU countries, a dentist in an EU member state can open the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive route to partial reimbursement. That route closed to UK residents from 1 January 2021, except for legacy cases. The UK Planned Treatment Scheme that replaced S2 covers only state-provided treatment with prior authorisation, so it does not fund private dental clinics in any of these four countries.
Put plainly: for a UK patient paying privately, choosing Romania, Hungary or Poland rather than Türkiye does not unlock NHS reimbursement. Check the current rules on the NHS website before you travel.
02
What the GHIC does and does not do
The UK GHIC lets you get necessary state healthcare during a temporary stay in EEA countries and a short list of others published by the NHS. Romania, Hungary and Poland are EU, and therefore EEA, countries; Türkiye is not on the NHS list.
In all four countries, the GHIC does not cover treatment in a private medical facility, and it does not cover planned treatment that is the reason for your trip. Specialist travel insurance is the usual way to look for cover, and many standard policies exclude travelling for treatment, so read the terms carefully.
03
How to check a dentist in each country
The General Dental Council only registers dental professionals working in the UK, and it warns that a similar body may not exist in every country. Before you travel, check the dentist's registration yourself instead of relying on a clinic's website or an agent.
- Romania: Colegiul Medicilor Stomatologi din România (CMSR), which has a public member search.
- Hungary: the public 'Alap- és Működési kereső' run by OKFŐ, searchable by name.
- Poland: the Central Register of Doctors and Dentists kept by the Naczelna Izba Lekarska, which patients can search online.
- Türkiye: dentists are organised in regional chambers under the Türk Dişhekimleri Birliği (Turkish Dental Association). Ask the clinic how you can independently verify the treating dentist's licence.
04
Contracts, language and complaints
In all four countries, your agreement is usually with the clinic and is likely to be governed by the law of the country where the clinic is based. Ask for the treatment plan, consent forms and terms in English, and keep copies.
If something goes wrong, the first step is normally the clinic's own complaints process. In Romania, Hungary and Poland, the EU's National Contact Points for cross-border healthcare publish information on patients' rights and complaint routes; Türkiye is outside that network. The General Dental Council registers dental professionals who work in the UK, so ask each clinic before you book how its complaints process works and who covers the cost of any corrections.
05
Travel time from the UK
Direct flights from London to Bucharest, Budapest, Warsaw or Kraków take roughly two and a half to three and a half hours, and London to Istanbul roughly four hours. Regional UK airports have fewer and often seasonal routes. These times are approximate: check current schedules before planning.
Implant treatment often involves more than one trip, sometimes months apart, so count the number of journeys, not just one flight, when you compare destinations.
Questions from British patients
Can I use the NHS to get money back for a dentist in Turkey, Hungary or Poland?
Not for private dental care. The EU Directive route closed to UK residents from 1 January 2021, and the UK Planned Treatment Scheme only covers state-provided treatment with prior authorisation. This applies equally to Romania.
Does my GHIC work in Turkey?
Türkiye is not on the NHS list of countries where the UK GHIC applies. In Romania, Hungary and Poland it covers necessary state healthcare during a stay, but never private clinics or planned treatment.
How do I check a dentist in Budapest?
Hungary's OKFŐ runs a public register search (Alap- és Működési kereső). You need the dentist's name; the registration number alone is not enough.
How do I check a dentist in Romania?
Dentists in Romania must be members of the Colegiul Medicilor Stomatologi din România (CMSR), which has a public member search on its website.
Which country is best for dental implants?
We do not rank countries or clinics. Compare written, itemised quotes, check the dentist's registration, count the number of trips and plan your follow-up care at home.
